Abstract:
This lecture will focus on what synchrotron-based spectroscopic techniques can uncover about the electronic, chemical, and magnetic properties of materials. We will examine methods such as photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) in ultraviolet and X-ray regimes with momentum resolution (ARPES), near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS), resonant PES, fast XPS, and others. As examples, we will consider biological systems like DNA and surface protein layers (S-layers), biomaterials of marine origin, graphene and its formation on metallic substrates, including nitrogen (N-) doped graphene, organic molecules, thin metallic films of noble metals, and observations of quantum-size effects.
